Magellan RoadMate 5375T-LMB

Magellan makes a lot of different GPS navigator models every year. The purpose is to make sure Magellan hits every reasonable price point for widespread adoption. It’s pretty simple really – those who are on a tight budget will want a GPS device with basic navigation features while others will want something that will give their old car some extra superpowers. The problem is that these different models often look alike and have confusing names. Usually, the more letters the model has, the more advanced it likely is. Just take a look at the Magellan RoadMate 5375T-LMB.

About the Magellan RoadMate 5375T-LMB

The RoadMate 5375T-LMB is the most advanced 5-inch Magellan device in the company 2015 lineup. That being said, it isn’t the most advanced device Magellan ever made as the touchscreen isn’t made of glass like the RoadMate 5430T-LM but the $199 price tag makes this high-end device very affordable and is a great deal overall once you get to know the features.

Exclusive Features

As indicated by the letter “B” at the end of the model name, the main feature that the Magellan RoadMate 5375T-LMB brings is Bluetooth connectivity. Not exactly groundbreaking since Bluetooth-enabled devices have been around for years but having such function is pretty impressive for a $199 GPS device. This makes the RoadMate 5375T-LMB essentially function as a basic Bluetooth speaker where you can pair your smartphone to the device and then voice calls come out of the device’s internal speaker. Because the Magellan RoadMate 5375T-LMB has an internal microphone as well, you can engage in a conversion hands-free while driving and staying focused on the road. Unfortunately, Magellan wasn’t able to extends mic’s ability to accept voice commands like several other Bluetooth-enabled GPS device can do. This explains why the 5375T-LMB is not super pricey.

The letter “T” immediately following the model number stands for traffic which highlights the free lifetime traffic feature. The device can wirelessly receive traffic updates in real-time so you can easily skip traffic jams and find alternate routes. That may sound generic but the Magellan RoadMate 5375T-LMB also works with the PhantomALERT service in providing traffic camera alerts too.

Magellan RoadMate devices are quite popular for their simple user interfaces and the RoadMate 5375T-LMB maintains that familiarity. Planning a route is really easy for both new and old Magellan users alike. The QuickSpell feature works great and you can witness it in action just typing a route and watch the keys on the onscreen keyboard highlight helping you spell a destination. The SmartCity search kicks in too serving as an autocomplete when you are keying in a city. Repeatedly typing in the destination can still be a chore and that’s where the OneTouch Favorites Menu kicks in. It is a menu you can always access on the top right corner in map view where you have easy access to any destinations you bookmarked.

Other great unique features include 3-D graphics of certain landmarks that can be used as a basis for turn-by-turn navigation just in case you are not familiar with the street names in the area. If you need to find a place to park, you can also use the Best Parking feature to get a direct route to the entrance along with the times it is open.

Other Features

With over 7 million points of interest covering all of the US along with Canada and Puerto Rico and free lifetime map updates, the Magellan RoadMate 5375T-LMB is a fine long-term companion. On rural areas, the route planning can be a bit spotty but common capabilities like Junction View and Smart Detour work pretty well. It is also possible to use the device in both portrait and landscape view.

Conclusion

Pros:

• Easy to operate for newbies and experienced Magellan users alike.

• Bluetooth hands-free operation with lifetime traffic for only $200.

• Landmark guidance and speed camera detection are great extras.

Cons:

• Spotty performance in rural areas.

• Doesn’t support voice commands.

Verdict:

Despite the minor shortcomings, the RoadMate 5375T-LMB is a great value for $200. Hopefully future updates can improve the route planning in rural areas. But you can be certain that the device will always stay fresh thanks to the lifetime map and traffic updates.
